Check out SPUR's website for the event information.  In 2019, Oakland underwent its typical two-year budgetary process to determine the financial resources needed to operate and achieve the city's goals through 2021. Since that budget was adopted, however, the COVID-19 pandemic has rocked municipalities' fiscal forecasts around the country, and comparable impacts are being felt here at home.

Memorial Day was initially called Declaration Day. In May 1868, U.S General John A. Logan first called for the observance of Decoration Day nationally:

The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.

Many of us have extra time these days. What better way to spend it than with a book! In these trying times, it's also helpful to stay in community, even if we can't personally be with each other.

This year--the hundredth anniversary of women's suffrage--we're starting the LWVO Centennial Book Club under the leadership of Trisha Gorman, LWVO Centennial Committee. We'll be meeting over Zoom on the third Thursday of every other month. (Zoom, which is free for users, works with PCs/Macs and on iPhones/Androids.)
